Hser Ner Moo Community and Welcome Center
The Hser Ner Moo Community & Welcome Center provides assistance to refugee and immigrant families to integrate into their new life in the United States. Programs include English as a Second Language and life skill courses for parents, early childhood programming, out of school programs for youth and teens, and outreach to the community.
The center empowers refugees and immigrants through the process of successful integration by facilitating access to resources, expanding networks and layers of service, creating opportunities for leadership, and by providing relevant, responsive services and support. The Hser Ner Moo Community & Welcome Center, sadly, came about due to a tragedy. In March of 2008, a seven year old Karen girl named Hser Ner Moo went missing. There was an outpour of support from the community as search efforts came together in order to find Hser Ner Moo. Unfortunately, she was found murdered in a townhome just across from where she lived. This tragedy put the wheels into motion for the Center to come about.
The Center opened in August 2008 just a few months after Hser Ner Moo’s death and has been growing and expanding to meet the needs of the community ever since. Managed by the City of South Salt Lake Recreation Department, it is now part of the South Salt Lake Partnerships for Success with other 7 sites that serve youth and their families in South Salt Lake.
