Education
Education is the most important engine of economic growth and individual financial gain. Building a strong economy and lifting incomes will depend on improving results in education. To achieve these results, we work with leaders at all levels of the education, nonprofit, civic, and philanthropic sectors to ensure that kids are succeeding every step of the way from cradle to career.
UNITED WAY’S OVERALL GOALS
FOR EDUCATION ARE:
Cradle to Kindergarten: Infants and toddlers demonstrate age-appropriate development and children enter kindergarten ready to learn
Kids on Track: Students achieve on grade level in reading, math, and science
Destination Graduation and Beyond: Students graduate from high school prepared for college or other post-secondary training, enroll in appropriate post-secondary education, and graduate or complete their program
United Way Neighborhood Centers build on high quality academic instruction and create additional academic support programs. Programs such as tutoring, mentoring, after-school programs, adult education, job training and placement, and dozens of other partnerships help ensure that students of all ages are able to experience an education that they would not be able to otherwise.
Results: DELIVERING ON OUR PROMISE
Increased School readiness: The achievement gap was completely closed in math and reading for low-income 3 and 4-year olds.
Increased academic achievement: In one year, the number of third-graders reading on grade-level increased by 27%.
Improved parental involvement: The number of parents engaged in school activities increased from 22-51 % in one year at Neighborhood Centers.
