Sabrina's Story
September 6, 2012Author: United Way of Salt Lake
Sabrina is the first in her family to graduate from high school. After immigrating to the United States when she was in the sixth grade, she had many challenges adjusting to life in a new country. Once Sabrina got into junior high and high school, she connected to programs and activities provided at school through partnerships with United Way of Salt Lake, where she was encouraged to plan for her future, be a mentor to others, and celebrate her culture. "For the first time, I had people looking out for me, encouraging me to do better in school and helping me realize that it really mattered." This fall, Sabrina is going to Salt Lake Community College to study to become a teacher. She wants to continue to positively influence others' lives. "There are lots of stereotypes about the Latino community. But, I want to show kids that they can be anything that they want to be in life an that school is really the most important thing."
