Jacob's Story
September 6, 2012Author: United Way of Salt Lake
Jacob, an eighth-grade student at Kearns Jr. High was at risk of being held back in school due to missed classes, unfinished homework, and behavior problems. His mom, Janet, was beside herself with worry for her youngest son. A teacher at Jacob’s school informed her about the opportunities available through the Neighborhood Center at Kearns and connected Janet to the Center coordinator. Jacob was enrolled in reading clinics, homework assistance, and had the opportunity to take Karate lessons and even cooking classes with a local chef. Jacob is making huge strides in his learning and has a newfound passion for creating new dishes for his family and friends. “I am so thankful for the opportunities that Jacob has had at the Neighborhood Center at Kearns. He is like a whole new kid—happy and excited about the new things he is learning and I never would have guessed that he has a knack for cooking!”
