SALT LAKE CITY -- Today is a day of action as the United Way launches an historic effort to recruit one million new volunteer readers, tutors and mentors over the next three years.

To mark the occasion, 1,000 volunteers will assemble 50,000 summer reading backpacks for elementary school students on the National Mall.

The United Way said in a news release that today, fewer Americans are likely to earn a diploma than their parents, a distinction not shared by any other industrialized country. When it comes to education, volunteers can make a big difference. In fact, mentoring only one hour a week can help improve the academic success of a young person.
