More than 3,300 volunteers are participating today in the United Way 19th Annual Day of Caring.

The volunteers gathered at the Gateway in the morning and will complete 115 one-day service projects in several counties in Utah. Several companies have let their employees take the day off to participate in the event.

South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood says about 500 of the 3,300 volunteers, about 20 percent will be focusing their efforts in South Salt Lake.

"We're going to be working in all of our city parks as well as doing some maintenance and weed pulling along the Jordan River Parkway," said Wood. "We'll also be doing some outreach to our seniors in our community, the elementary students at Woodrow

Wilson and planting some park strips along West Temple which is considered a gateway to our city."
