Supporting the children and families in our community is critical because it ensures a brighter future for us all. Quality childcare and afterschool learning programs promote social and intellectual development for children while helping them achieve in school. Other valuable supports, such as life skills enrichment and parenting classes, also give families the tools to succeed and thrive. Recent data illustrates the need for strengthening the families in our communities. In 2006, more than 100,000 adults and youths in Utah needed substance abuse treatment, while less than 20% of adults and about 13% of youth received public assistance for treatment. Domestic violence continues to impact Utah families, with the number of domestic-violence-related child abuse cases increasing 53% from 2000 to 2005. Additionally, half of all Utah children under 6 years old require some kind of childcare, as both of their parents or their sole parent works outside the home. However, more than 50% of infant care and more than 40% of toddler care is unaffordable for low-income families, even with state subsidies for child care. We are making a genuine, lasting difference in the lives of our communities' children and families. By focusing on families now, United Way of Salt Lake and our community partners are laying the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous community. |
