Heidi started using drugs when she was just 13 years old. She dropped out of school, began fighting with her family, and started hanging out with the wrong crowd. She even started selling drugs to support her drug habit.

When Heidi was 19, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Rikky, but was thrown in jail 10 months later after a drug raid on her house. After she got out of jail, Heidi knew she didn’t want to be on drugs, but she didn’t know how to live without them. She turned to a United Way agency partner for help.

Heidi enrolled in a substance abuse program and learned how to cope without the use of drugs. She participated in social skills and communication training, parenting skills classes, group therapy, and life skills training. Thanks to her hard work and commitment, Heidi has resolved many of the issues that led to her drug abuse. Now she deals with stress in healthy, productive ways.

Today, Heidi is planning on going to college and working toward a career that can provide a future for her and Rikky. She’s regained her self-esteem, drive to succeed, confidence, and is looking forward to dealing with all life has to offer!
