United Way of Salt Lake Merges with United Way of Davis County
|
| |
|
|
|
|
|
August 10, 2006, was a historic day for United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL). At its meeting that morning, UWSL's Board of Directors approved a resolution to merge its operations with those of United Way of Davis County (UWDC). By blending the two organizations into a single entity, stakeholders in both Salt Lake and Davis County will be provided with enhanced services and better customer service.
The merger, which the Board of Directors of UWDC formally ratified on August 9, will create efficiencies for both organizations. Representatives from UWDC approached Salt Lake's United Way several months ago about the idea of merging the two entities. Board members, along with staff, from both organizations have served on a joint task force overseeing the process and doing due diligence since earlier this year.
The merger should eliminate confusion for Davis County residents who commute to and work in Salt Lake County, and vice versa. Contributions will be put to work where the needs are the greatest.
Many business operations, including administration, accounting/internal controls, HR functions, pledge processing, AP/AR functions, marketing/communications, public policy advocacy, research, resource development oversight and community impact oversight will all be consolidated and housed at the UWSL office. All of these functions will be absorbed into UWSL's operating functions without adding additional staff.
"By consolidating a number of services, we can better utilize the limited funds we have available for grants and strategic initiatives," said Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions Bank and chairman of the UWSL Board of Directors.
An office will be maintained and staffed in northern Davis County. The office is currently housed in Layton. The Davis County staff will consist of Tim Shultz, former President of UWDC, who will serve in the role of Regional Director - Davis County, and Brian Guyer, who will work as a Community Investment Advisor. They will work to build relationships, assess community needs, develop resources and work with Davis County communities to develop strategies to best meet the needs of the residents.
An Advisory Board, comprised of Davis County community leaders, will be assembled. Four members of the Davis County Advisory Board will join the UWSL Board of Directors. They include Scott Burton, Citigroup; Bill George, The Boeing Company; John Jones, First National Bank; and Sean Slatter, Logistic Specialties, Inc. who will also serve on the Executive Committee representing the interests of Davis County. John Jones will serve on the Resource Development Cabinet. In addition, Davis County citizens will comprise teams that make grant-making recommendations for Davis County's community partners.
Eighteen human service providers, who serve the residents of Davis County, will join the list of community partners working to improve the lives of people in UWSL's service area of Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties. Partnership for these organizations is dependent upon their contract signature. They include: American Red Cross of Northern Utah, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, Boy Scouts of America - Trapper Trails Council, Boys and Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis, Catholic Community Services of Utah, Community Nursing Services, Davis Behavioral Health, Davis County Dental Health Program, Davis County Teen Line, Davis Head Start Family Enrichment Center, Family Connection Center, Family Counseling Service of Northern Utah, Family Summit Foundation - A Center for Grieving Children, Intermountain Specialized Abuse Treatment Center, Pioneer Adult Rehabilitation Center, Safe Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter, South Davis Recovery Club and TURN Community Services.
"Under this new arrangement, grants for community partners in Davis County will be maintained at least at current levels, and we're hoping that we can increase our opportunities as we streamline our operations and processes." said Sean Slatter of Logistics Specialties, who has served since 1995 as a UWDC board member.
The name of the organization will remain as United Way of Salt Lake. The geographic identifier will be changed to read: serving Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties. Deborah S. Bayle, current President and CEO for UWSL, will lead the newly combined organization.
Through the due diligence processes, UWSL has made sure that it can maintain its 100% Promise by ensuring that Cornerstone Partners continue to underwrite all of its costs of doing business, even with the added responsibilities of including Davis County in its operations. The 100% Promise provides donors with the assurance that 100 percent of every dollar received works to improve lives and meet the greatest needs in the community.

United Way Recommends Community Learning Centers
|
| 12 |
|
| |
After nine months of deliberation, focus groups with educators, parents and youth, and a review of local and national research, United Way of Salt Lakeís Barriers to Education Community Change Council has recommended the establishment of a Technical Assistance and Resource Initiative to expand the availability of comprehensive community learning centers as a way to improve educational outcomes for children.
United Way of Salt Lake's 2004 Community Assessment identified "barriers to education" as one of four core issues having the greatest impact on significant community needs. A Community Change Council, made up of community leaders and education experts was convened to identify potential strategies to achieve changes in community conditions related to the four core issues and to create the school, community and family conditions for all children in Salt Lake County to learn at their best.
A Community Learning Center (CLC) is a philosophy, a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. These resources are provided not
only to students, but to entire families with the objective of empowering and supporting parents to be engaged in the education of their children, while also addressing their own barriers. The integrated focus on academics, services, supports and opportunities leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.
Many schools in Utah have implemented some elements of
the CLC model. Typically, these are after-school programs, parent resource centers and parent involvement initiatives. In a few instances, schools and communities have implemented a more comprehensive approach. Typical barriers to full implementation include lack of sustainable resources and in some instances, lack of support from the community.
Comprehensive CLC models have been developed and
implemented throughout the country, including, Schools of the 21st Century in Connecticut, Beacons Schools in New York, Texas Alliance Schools and Communities in Schools (33 states). Evaluations of CLCs show significant improvements in student achievement and behavior, community involvement and access to needed services. For more information about Community Learning Centers, please contact Bill Crim at

Workplace Support Vital to United Way's Success |
|
| |
Every year, United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) partners with over 600 companies to raise resources to address the most critical human needs in the community. Educational workplace campaigns are an integral part of UWSL's resource development efforts. Successful workplace campaigns are a mixture of education, fun, employee involvement and careful planning. The best workplace campaigns share something else: a thorough understanding of UWSL and its role in bringing Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele Counties together and making it
a better place for everyone to live and work.
Workplace campaigns connect companies and employees to the community by fostering teamwork, creativity and community-engagement. Employees learn about the community's most critical needs during educational group
meetings and have opportunities to invest in solutions that will create lasting change for the community through their personal contributions.

"Workplace campaigns give individuals an opportunity to get involved in changing community conditions," said Rebecca Dutson, vice president of resource development. "That's the power of United Way. An individual's contribution, when combined with others, helps thousands of people in our communities get back on their feet, while also helping to eliminate the underlying causes of so many problems. We are so appreciative of the generosity of hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals who make this important work possible."
For employees of organizations not offering workplace campaign meetings, a presentation can be scheduled by

United Way Staff Holds Its Most
Successful Workplace Campaign |
United Way and BMW Team Up Again |
| |
|
|
|
| |
The United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) staff stepped into the world of reality television as it conducted its internal educational workplace campaign in July. Held the week of July 10, the event featured a variety of activities designed to increase awareness of the
community's needs. This year's theme, "This is Reality..." devoted each day to a different reality TV show.
Campaign festivities culminated with a "Department Head Idol" competition wherein department managers were assigned to donation jars. The three managers whose jars garnered the highest donations by the end of the week sang a pre-selected karaoke song for the staff. UWSL staff members were treated to the musical styling of finalists Kristine Pepin, Bill Crim and Deborah S. Bayle.
The staff showed its belief in UWSL's community impact by crushing its goal of $45,000, ultimately raising $51,030-with 20 staff members giving a leadership gift of over $1,000. This generous 19 percent increase over last year's goal makes the 2006 internal campaign the most successful ever!
