Historically, women have been leaders of social change through their personal passion, time, and talent. Today, women of United Way of Salt Lake's WPN not only commit their personal passion and time, but also their financial resources to help provide a solution to the dramatically growing community issue related to immigrant integration and English as a second language. WPN members are aware of the "power of the purse" and are driving their resources toward the English Learning Opportunities initiative to create community change through their personal philanthropy. Educating. . .The education began on September 15, 2005 in the back room at Lamb's Grill Cafe. Becky Potts provided the breakfast and about 20 women, all loyal supporters of United Way of Salt Lake, provided the interest and the energy. The women came to learn. They discussed the emerging economic power of women and how women have greater ability-now, more than ever before-to become a force for community change. They learned that women hold 51 percent of our nation's wealth and control 83 percent of household spending. At this meeting, the women learned about the "power of the purse" and their ability to drive community change though their personal philanthropy. Inspiring. . .Only three months later, at the law firm of Holland & Hart, United Way of Salt Lake Women's Philanthropic Network held its first formal meeting. Fueled by a passion to help create lasting change in our community, a desire to reach out to a diverse network of business and community leaders, and to strengthen the voice of women, WPN members put their power and influence to work. Empowering . . .In less than a year, using only their personal network of friends and colleagues, the Women's Philanthropic Network more than tripled its membership. Each member committed to make a minimum annual investment of $2,500 directed toward the immensely challenging United Way of Salt Lake English Learning Opportunities initiative. Members eagerly accepted assignments, and everyone committed to being an advocate for the Network by educating, inspiring, and empowering other women to get involved. |
